Surfing around this afternoon, I noticed an interesting poll in the bottom right corner of Sega's of America's web site. Here's the question and the results as of 2:35 EDT on Sept. 27.
Where do you go online to get game info?
1UP.com - 87 (6%)
GamePro - 123 (8%)
IGN - 300 (21%)
GameSpot - 474 (33%)
Other - 471 (32%)
This poll is far from scientific of course -- the sample is self-selected from Sega.com visitors. Still, it's interesting to see the results skewing so far towards GameSpot and IGN (Which was not listed as IGN/GameSpy -- how old is this poll?). Is there some specific reason that Sega fans aren't visiting 1up?
I'd love to see a breakdown of the sites that make up the "other" category. Would it be dominated by major news and review sites, blog-style link outlets or small, independent-minded sites? Hard to say.
One thing's for sure... if I was an advertising manager at Gamestop or IGN, I'd be expecting a call from Sega pretty soon.

Your insert credit link is wrong, there's no dash in between insertcredit. :)
ReplyDeletemaybe 1up.com's flash-based redesign has driven users away. i myself can't go there any more-- my old pc slows to a crawl there. i suppose the high system requirements would make more sense if it were a pc-games-only-site (pc gamers are likely to have more powerful machines), but since it also covers console games, i think it was a bad move on their part.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they didn't list IGN/GameSpy that way because they are still separate editorial sites? I'm surprised they didn't list GameSpy and lumped it in the "other" category.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like the most logical solution.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of the fact that IGN/Gamespy are now one company, they're two separate sites. And the poll says "Where do you go" which means what site do you go to, not which company do you patronize.

Oh, and I almost forgot, I think 1up got short shrift in this poll because I don't think it's very well known among gamers.
ReplyDeleteEverybody reads EGM, but 1up isn't a big destination for game stuff on the Internet.
And as somebody else said, 1up was hard to navigate before. If it's worse now I don't even want to go there.

I'm not a Sega fan, but I know why I don't go to 1up.
ReplyDeleteThe site layout is awful. On dialup, it takes time seemingly measured in minutes just to load a single page. The site would even always cause the drivers for my old US Robotics modem to crash.
And even if you are willing to sit through the load times and put up with the poor layout, there just isn't anything worthwhile there that you can't find easier and quicker elsewhere. When 1up even bothers to have something worthwhile, that is.
I can get a better spread of information from a variety of more specialist sites for the same amount of hassle as navigating 1up. For example, I can read every new news article on gamesindustry.biz before I can get to and through one 1up newsbit. And if I want info on a specific game, it is easier to get that info in places other than 1up as well. And for just casual news that I wasn't looking for, again the more specialist sites combined with certain forums and even weblogs will produce much better results than 1up would ever dream of offering.
