Did anyone catch the special dual-screen broadcast on G4TechTV yesterday (as described in this press release)? Apparently, the video game/technology network celebrated the launch of the Nintendo DS with 20 hours of programming in a split screen format with a Nintendo DS frame. The press release says that they "partnered with Nintendo" on this, so I can only assume the big N paid big bucks to basically take over the network for a day.
I didn't get a chance to see it (being busy most of the day playing my own DS) but I'd love to hear about it from someone who did. Did it strike you as gimmicky, interesting, distracting, innovative, overly-commercial, overly-biased or all or none of the above? How did it compare to recent G4 promotions like "GTA TV" and "Halo 2 Day"? Drop your comments using the link below.
More Nintendo DS coverage coverage coming in the near future.

all of the above actually. i watched it through the whole demo they were playing in the bottom screen (the g4 portion being on top), which was not long it seemed. most of all i wish it took over both screens to show the gameplay, but the ds looked good nonetheless.

Quite possibly the worst case of sellout ever. I kept waiting for the actual programming to "retake" the screen real estate, to no avail. A neat gimmick if it had been for moments at a time. However, it rendered both the looped gameplay and real programming nigh unwatchable... and that was on my 48" big screen. Kudos to Nintendo for what was probably some very inexpensive hype to a core demo. Jeers to G4 for shafting their producers and viewers with crippling presentation of rather interesting information. All in all, I hope we never see this kind of thing again.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm not holding my breath.
I agree with Drew completely. What was G4 thinking, ruining programming for the whole day. I wish they had DS day on a weekday too, so some of the shows would've actually discussed it rather than have a demo play in a constant loop.
ReplyDeleteI bet Nintendo was originally going to buy only 10 hours of network time, but then nobody at G4 had enough cash to split a twenty.
ReplyDeleteSkyNet... That crack made me do a "spit-take" it was so funny.
ReplyDeleteNow how the heck am I going to clean the coke out of my keyboard?
