If you read this site regularly, you probably get tired of me lecturing like I know everything about videogame journalism. Well, frankly, I get tired of lecturing too. Maybe if you all knew more I could stop.
Seriously, though, the best way to learn is to ask, so in an effort to change the tone around here a little, the start of what I hope will be a regular VG Ombudsman feature: The Ombudsman Asks. Basically, I ask a question and you guys answer it using the comments link below.
Today's question: Where and when do you read about videogames?
I don't mean "What videogame web sites do you go to?" or "What videogame magazines do you read?" but where do you read about videogames? At the computer? In the bathroom? At the breakfast table? In bed? On the subway? On your favorite easy chair? On TV (technically watching, not reading, but I'm flexible)?
I also want to know about general environment and timing. Do you read with music or the TV on in the background? What kind of lighting do you like? Do you read during the endless loading screens during Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex. Do you read while you should be working? Do you read while you should be reading something else?
Again, use the comments link below to answer.

I read in my video game room on the couch on the cushion nearest the stairs. Don't ask why. I read while watching G4TechTV or a classic sitcom.
ReplyDeleteI'd say about half the time I'm reading about videogames at the computer in the living room. The other half is flipping through game magazines on the couch. Sometimes the TV or stereo is on for noise.
ReplyDeleteI read at the PC with an RSS reader, usually once a day but less often if there is nothing interesting.
ReplyDeleteNintendo Power, PC Gamer, and Official Playstation Magazine - usually on the toilet.
ReplyDeleteI read Penny Arcade, CheapAssGamer, eToychest, Slashdot:Games, and Planet Gamecube using RSS feeds. I usually do this at work when I should be working.
I read everyday while at work and check it maybe once on the weekend the following web sites:
ReplyDeleteIGN.com, especially the console-specific boards.
Redassbaboon.com, awesome blog.
Evilavatar.com
Shacknews.com
GamesIndustry.biz
Teamxbox.com
Xbox.com
Slashdot.com
WorthPlaying.com
This awesome Microsoft employee's blog, http://www.majornelson.com/blog/blog.html
Gamespy.com
Gamespot.com
gameInformer.com
1up.com
OCGN.com (Online Console Gaming Network)
I also frequesnt this blog, Engadget.com, Gizmodo.com, Rewiredmind.com, Xbox-scene.com among others.
I watch G4TechTV religiously.
I also post a lot and enjoy the communities at GamerWithJobs.com and a small clan-based site (that never misses and Halo 2 news) called ScreenCheaters.com.
I DO NOT subscribe to any gaming magazines. They are all the same.
I read at the computer, primarily: GameSpot, GamesIndustryBiz, Guardian GamesBlog, and an LJ gaming community. Sometimes music is on, sometimes not.
ReplyDeleteI do have a subscription to Nintendo Power only on the basis that it got me the Zelda Collector's Edition disc. I usually read magazines in the bathroom or at my desk (whenever I'm not reading stuff online, or when pages fail to load quickly). I'll read mags when I have nothing better to do, but I'll actively look for news on the computer when I should be doing something else.
I usually flip through a magazine during long compile times or when I'm lying in bed. Other times, they just take up lots of room in my house and make for dangerously high, shaky piles that will kill me later on.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who can make a magazine changer like 200-CD changers would get my money no problem. And if it can sort the magazines, so much the better.
I find myself reading videogame websites at school. The professor is yacking about some stupid stuff, and I take the time to catch up on todays game related news. I like to read game magazines in a quite area like my bedroom, but reading in the family room with the tv on is becomming more frequent for me. But no matter where I am, reading while around my girlfreind is impossible. I just get distracted.
ReplyDeleteI do most of my reading on the computer in my bedroom. Other reading is done on the laptop on the floor in front of the TV (which is sometimes off, sometimes on). Or at work when I have some downtime.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read magazines it's on the couch with the TV off.

I usually read game magazines like EGM before going to bed, or at work during slow periods of the day. I prefer to read without the annoyance of a TV on.
ReplyDeleteI check sites like 1up.com when I get home from work to check the news, and gameblogs.org to see what's been posted. I suppose most of my reading is on a PC nowadays.
I used to watch a lot of Gamespot TV/Extended Play/Xplay on Tech TV until I started getting home after it was over. Don't watch much G4TechTV about video games anymore besides turning it on occassionally.

I don't own any next-gen consoles, so no need for me to read about games. I have 2-3 year old PC Gamer magazines which I read when I run out of reading material either in the bathroom or in bed when I'm about to sleep.
ReplyDeleteI however watch X-Play and other G4TechTV shows frequently.
Sincerely,
Michael Fan
Is this a ploy to find out some sort of demographic for the new ads you'll be hosting?
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I keep a game magazine around is so I have something to read in the crapper. Other wise its the internet for my videogame news. Usually early in the mourning around 4Am, after I finish watching Adult Swim.

There are a few kinds of reading I do. First off, (not really reading) is the G4 tv stuff. I do this when I'm being very lazy and don't want to think. I usually hope for Cinematech as an alternative to browsing the internet for trailers of games. I'm ecstatic if Icons is actually on when I'm watching. Whenever I watch this, I'm usually reclined on the couch nearly falling asleep.
ReplyDeleteI also read the equivalent of gaming tabloids, ie. game review magazines. I only have one right now, and old copy of the Official Xbox Magazine that I got for a demo disc, but it's suitable if I absolutely need something to look at while in the bathroom. I usually try not to read it, but just look at the screenshots.
The last type of reading I do is the "real" reading. I read your blog now, Gamasutra, Blues News just to kind of keep on top of what's happening at-the-moment, Jamie Fristrom's blog, Scott Miller's and I poke around a few others here and there, mostly linked off of your guys' sites. I like to keep up with real industry information, and you guys seem to be the way to do it as of now. I also like to look at Double Fine Action News every now and then for a dose of unreality. I read these from my bedroom in the basement here, complete with bad lighting conditions and a very tiny window. This shall change when I move into my 12th floor apartment next week!
